“Do I Really Need to Use Sunscreen in the Winter?”

The answer is a definitive YES! Did you know that anyone over the age of 6 months of age should use sunscreen every day? The number one cause of pre-mature skin aging is exposure to UV light which breaks down your skin's connective tissue — collagen and elastin fibers, which lie in the deeper layer of skin. The sun emits harmful UV rays year-round, even on cloudy days, up to 80% of the sun’s harmful UV rays can penetrate your skin. Not only does sunscreen protect your skin from UV rays and skin cancer, it also provides a barrier to your skin which preventing wrinkles, fine lines and hyperpigmentation.

While the SPF that you use daily can vary on the season and the amount of exposure, the act of daily application should not change. Using a 30 SPF for mild exposure (like running errands, taking the dog for a walk, etc.) in the winter is fine, however, if you are headed up to the ski slopes for an all day long shooshing session, 50-100 is recommended and be sure to reapply (again, it doesn’t matter if it is cloudy or sunny). We often focus our efforts on our face in the winter season, however, any areas that are exposed should also get an application like neck, chest, arms and hands.

In addition, this time of year is the perfect time to address any hyperpigmentation and recondition the skin through facial treatment peels. Plus Fall/Winter during the dark season is the only time to do Level 2 peels that require downtime. With a metabolic peel, the skin undergoes a complete metamorphosis using chemical and non-chemical agents to stimulate collagen and elastin, breakdown hyperpigmentation and clear away any potential acne-causing bacteria.
